Does the weather affect weight gain in college?

Today was definitely a beautiful day, and I was thrilled to get outside in the sunshine for a bike ride. After my ride, I didn't stop there, I went to a fitness class and then went swimming afterward.

This must sound like I'm a fitness machine and super in-shape, but that's really not the case. I hardly stepped out once this winter to exercise. Part of it may have been added stress, as it's May term now and not quite comparable to my hectic winter semester I've just come out of. But a bigger part of it was the fact that I didn't want to put on all my layers then walk all the way to the W, take off some layers and exercise indoors where it's always way too hot, and then walk back in the snow and the cold.

Also, this past winter wasn't exactly the best for my mood or my esteem. I often felt depressed, which I felt made me want to eat more unhealthy items and snack constantly. As a result of little to no exercise and a high intake of junk food, I gained a few pounds this winter that I'm now trying to lose, but I'm not too concerned with the coming summer, as I will want to be outside more often.

What do you think? Does the weather affect whether or not you want to work out? Do you find yourself eating more during the winter? Do you think this is the case for only college students or for everyone?

Or is it just me?!

  1. Cold weather definitely inhibits my desire to exercise. On a cold winter morning it's hard to get out of bed and down to the bike. I have to really "will" myself to do it.
I think you're right about the weather. It's been a long, depressing winter and now a cold spring. Eventually it will get warm!
